When Vercel is not a good fit

Vercel is a cloud platform from Vercel Inc., the company that created and maintains Next.js, for building and deploying websites and web apps from a Git repository. It gives every pull request a preview URL and runs server code on Vercel Functions using the Fluid compute model. There is a free Hobby plan for personal, non-commercial use, and the Pro plan costs $20 a month per deploying seat with $20 of monthly usage credit.

It is a weaker choice for:

  • Commercial projects on the free plan: Hobby is limited to personal, non-commercial use
  • Long-running background processes: functions stop after 300 seconds by default and 800 seconds at most on Pro, outside the 30-minute beta
  • Predictable flat bills at high traffic: usage beyond the included credit is billed on demand
  • Self-hosting: the platform is proprietary and runs only on Vercel's infrastructure
