A good fit for
- Next.js apps, since Vercel builds and maintains the framework
- Frontend teams that want a preview URL for every pull request
- Personal projects and prototypes on the free Hobby plan
- Sites that mix static pages with server-rendered routes and API functions
Not a good fit for
- Commercial projects on the free plan: Hobby is limited to personal, non-commercial use
- Long-running background processes: functions stop after 300 seconds by default and 800 seconds at most on Pro, outside the 30-minute beta
- Predictable flat bills at high traffic: usage beyond the included credit is billed on demand
- Self-hosting: the platform is proprietary and runs only on Vercel's infrastructure

About Vercel
Vercel builds and hosts web projects. You connect a Git repository, and Vercel detects the framework, builds the project and deploys it to its global CDN. Each pull request gets its own preview URL, and merging to the production branch deploys the live site.
Server code runs on Vercel Functions. Since 23 April 2025, new projects use Fluid compute by default, which lets one function instance handle several requests at once and bills for active CPU time and provisioned memory. Functions support Node.js, Python, Bun and Rust, among other runtimes.
The company was founded by Guillermo Rauch in 2015 as ZEIT and renamed Vercel in April 2020. Besides hosting, it maintains Next.js, the AI SDK and Turborepo, and makes v0, an AI tool for building websites.
