When Supabase is not a good fit

Supabase is an open source backend platform, made by Supabase Inc., that gives each project a dedicated Postgres database plus authentication, auto-generated APIs, realtime subscriptions, file storage and edge functions. It has a free plan with 2 active projects and a 500 MB database, and paid plans start at $25 a month for Pro. The code is Apache-2.0 licensed and can be self-hosted.

It is a weaker choice for:

  • Always-on free projects: free projects pause after 1 week of inactivity
  • Teams that don't want to write SQL or Postgres policies for access control
  • Predictable flat bills at scale: database size, users, storage and egress above the plan limits are billed per unit
