AI coding tools fall into three groups. Coding agents take a task, plan it, edit files across the project and run commands, usually from the terminal. AI editors build chat, completion and agent features into the editor you write in. Completion tools add suggestions to an editor you already use.
The groups overlap, and many teams use more than one: an agent for larger changes and an editor or completion tool for everyday edits. Start from where you work (terminal, VS Code, JetBrains) and how much you want the tool to do without you.
Pricing differs more than features do. Some tools charge a flat monthly seat, some meter usage against a model provider, and open source tools are free but need your own model API key.

What is the difference between a coding agent and code completion?
Code completion suggests the next few lines as you type. A coding agent takes a task in plain language, reads the project, edits several files and runs commands such as tests, then reports back. Many tools now offer both.
Are open source AI coding tools free?
The tool is free, but the model behind it usually is not. Most open source coding tools ask for an API key from a model provider and you pay that provider per token, unless you run a local model.
Can I use more than one AI coding tool?
Yes. A common setup is a terminal agent for larger changes and an editor with completion for day-to-day edits. Check that two tools are not both trying to complete the same keystrokes in one editor.
