Cline
Cline is an open source coding agent made by Cline Bot Inc. and released under the Apache 2.0 license. It runs as a VS Code extension, a JetBrains plugin and a command line tool, reads your project, edits files and runs shell commands with your approval. The tool is free; you pay your chosen model provider for inference.

A good fit for
- Developers who want an agent inside VS Code or JetBrains and want to choose their own model provider
- Teams that need to review every file edit and command before it runs
- Projects that benefit from per-repository rules and MCP tool servers
- Automated tasks in CI through the headless CLI
Not a good fit for
- Fixed monthly costs: you pay per token to your model provider, so heavy agent runs can cost more than a flat subscription
- Use without any API key or credits: Cline needs a model provider to work
- Inline autocomplete as the main feature: it is built around agent tasks
Cline pricing
The open source version is free with no subscription or seat fees; you pay for model inference, either with your own API keys or through managed infrastructure. Enterprise pricing is custom.

About Cline
Cline is an autonomous coding agent. It reads the structure of a project, proposes edits across several files, runs bash commands and watches their output, and asks for approval before it changes anything. Edits appear as diffs, and checkpoints let you roll a task back.
It does not ship its own model. You connect a provider such as Anthropic, OpenAI, Google or AWS Bedrock, and the project lists more than 200 supported models. The usage-based model means there is no subscription: you pay only for the AI inference you use.
Beyond interactive use, the README describes a headless CLI for CI pipelines, scheduled runs on cron schedules, multi-agent coordination and connectors for Slack, Telegram and Discord.
