When Prisma is not a good fit

Prisma is an open source database toolkit for Node.js and TypeScript, built around a type-safe ORM, a schema-first data model and a migration system. Prisma Data, Inc. also offers a managed platform, including Prisma Postgres, with a free tier and usage-based paid plans. The Prisma ORM itself is free and open source under the Apache 2.0 license.

It is a weaker choice for:

  • Projects not built on Node.js or TypeScript
  • Teams whose primary workflow needs very fine-grained control over raw SQL
  • Very high request volumes on the managed platform without moving to a higher-tier plan
