When Mailgun is not a good fit

Mailgun is an email platform for sending, receiving and tracking email through an API or SMTP. It was founded in 2010 and is owned by Sinch through its parent company Pathwire. A free plan allows 100 emails a day, and paid plans start at $15 a month for 10,000 emails.

It is a weaker choice for:

  • Teams that need a long free plan: the free plan is capped at 100 emails a day and 1 day of logs
  • Marketing-first teams that want campaign and automation tooling built for non-developers
  • Anyone who needs open source or self-hosting: Mailgun is a hosted service
  • Low-volume senders that need a dedicated IP, which costs $59 a month per IP
