Codeium
Codeium was an AI coding assistant that evolved into the Windsurf editor. Cognition acquired Windsurf in July 2025, and the product has since been renamed Devin Desktop, combining Windsurf's editor with Cognition's Devin coding agents. About Codeium
Codeium began as an AI code completion and chat tool available as a plugin for existing editors, competing with tools like GitHub Copilot on free, generous usage limits. The company later built a full standalone editor around the technology and rebranded it Windsurf.
In July 2025, Cognition, the company behind the autonomous coding agent Devin, acquired Windsurf. The product has since been renamed Devin Desktop, positioned as a command center for managing coding agents: planning, delegating, reviewing and shipping work across local and cloud agents from inside an integrated editor.
Existing Windsurf users were migrated to Devin Desktop automatically, with their plan, pricing, extensions and settings carried over. A separate Windsurf Plugin remains available as an IDE extension for people who want completions inside their existing editor rather than the full Devin Desktop app.
